What happens when you lick a diamond?

What’s the deal with diamonds? Intelligent, well-grounded women have been known to behave absolutely loopy in the presence of them.

Especially the big ones. The diamonds, I mean.

Here are six fun facts about diamonds you might not have known:

#1 If you put a diamond on your tongue, your tongue will start to get cooler! This happens because diamonds are great conductors of heat. Your tongue feels cool because the diamond is drawling heat out of your tongue.

#2 The engagement ring is worn on the third finger of the left hand because the early Egyptians believed that the vein of love ran directly from the heart to the top of the third finger.

#3 The largest diamond ever found was 3106 carats.

#4 A diamond is four times harder than the next hardest material – corundum , from which rubies and sapphires are formed.

#5 Diamond deposits were discovered in North America in the 1840s

#6  A diamond is the hardest natural substance on earth, but if it is placed in an oven and the temperature is raised to about 763 degrees Celsius (1405 degrees Fahrenheit), it will simply vanish, without even ash remaining. Only a little carbon dioxide will have been released.
So don’t do that.

The necklace has gone…sideways.

Some time the beginning of 2010 we started getting requests for a simple cross necklace, with the cross laying sideways instead of straight up-and-down:

That simple design has gone on to be a fashion game-changer, and has spawned a whole new movement of sideways necklace styles.

It’s a great idea, because these delicate, understated necklaces can be layered and worn with different length necklaces.

Hmmm, now who could have come up with such a great jewelry idea??

Focus on the Family (bracelet)

For the last 25 or so years we have quietly been making one of the most awesome personalized name bracelets ever. It’s basically a connecting letters name bracelet, but we call it the Family Bracelet because many times women will put their children’s or grand children’s names around it or even the whole family’s names.

We started adding diamonds – and started making them in 14k white gold as well as yellow – and I can honestly say that every women who’s gotten one of these bracelets has said it’s become their favorite piece of jewelry. Ever.

This a completely hand crafted piece of jewelry and while there used to be a few other companies making them, as far as I know we are one of the few that’s still around.

Because the price of gold has gotten so high the price of these bracelets has gone up considerably (they are pretty substantial and definitely have some heft to them). We’ve had many requests to make them in sterling silver which would be much less expensive, but I’ll let you in on a little secret: We TRIED making a few in sterling silver (photo below) and it was a dismal failure.

Our ill-fated sterling silver experiment
Silver proved to be too light/brittle of a metal to work with this design, and while the bracelets looked great at first they soon started to fall apart.  This is one name bracelet that screams for the weight and durability of 14k gold.
Over the years we’ve had quite a few adventures with these bracelets, including removing more than a few husband’s names (sometimes things just don’t work out), and adding one and even TWO additional strands when some people just don’t stop making grand kids!
